Payne's Crossing

In the mid-19th century, Freedom Seekers on the Underground Railroad took various routes to find freedom. They relied on natural features like forests, rivers, and other landmarks to navigate their way. Many freedom seekers traveled north through Ohio, a free state, on their journey. In Ohio, they were likely to encounter the free Black community of Payne's Crossing, which is now part of Wayne National Forest.
